Low Self-Esteem

What Is Self-Esteem?

Low Self-Esteem Counselling Plymouth

Self-esteem is how we see and feel about ourselves.

It’s about whether we think we’re good, worthy, and valuable as people and is made up of our thoughts, beliefs, and feelings about ourselves.

Self-esteem is important because it affects how we see ourselves, how we act, and how we get along with others.

It can change over time based on things that happen to us and how we think about ourselves. It’s not something that stays the same all the time.

Low self-esteem develops through a complex mix of psychological, social, and environmental factors. Some examples are:

  • Perfectionism and self-criticism – Setting excessively high standards and engaging in self-critical thinking patterns can create a constant sense of falling short and never being good enough.
  • Unrealistic standards and comparisons – Comparing oneself to others who appear to be more successful, attractive, or accomplished can lead to feelings of inadequacy and diminished self-worth. Unrealistic societal standards of beauty, success, or achievement can contribute to low self-esteem.

  • Childhood experiences – Negative experiences during childhood, such as abuse, neglect, harsh criticism, or constant comparison to others, can significantly impact self-esteem. These experiences may create a belief system that one is unworthy or flawed.

  • Traumatic events – Experiencing traumatic events, such as accidents, loss, or failure, can profoundly impact self-esteem, especially if individuals blame themselves for what happened or develop a negative self-image as a result.

  • Negative social interactions – Constant negative feedback, bullying, or rejection from peers, family members, or authority figures can erode self-esteem and reinforce negative self-perceptions.

How Plymouth Counselling Can Help Improve Self-Esteem

You may recognise one or more of the causes of low self-esteem from the above list that you feel have impacted you. Counselling gives you a safe space to learn about the impact of these causes and then for us to move forward together, rebuilding your feelings of worth and value.

It may be uncomfortable at first to acknowledge your own needs but making the time for yourself for counselling already subconsciously lets you know that you are worthy. We would build on this together, discovering your needs and how to meet them and in turn, taking you to the confident, authentic place you want and deserve to be.
